Can you replace 225 55 17 with 235 55 17? ›

235 is the width in millimetres from sidewall to sidewall. 55 is the aspect ratio, so this means the height is equal to 55% of the tire's width. R stands for radial construction which refers to how the tires are made. 17 is the rim diameter in inches of the wheel from one end to the other.

As a general rule, you want replacement tires that are within 3 percent of the diameter (height) measurement of your existing tires' diameter — assuming your current tires are what your owner's manual recommends.
